Coronation Street fans praised Asha Alahan on Wednesday night, after she casually came out to her dad Dev.

The teen stunned her father by revealing she was about to go on a date with her pal Nina Lucas, but insisted she didn’t want to put a label on her sexuality.

Fans have been eagerly hoping for a romance between Asha and Nina after the pair shared their first kiss in Monday’s show.

Dev (played by Jimmi Harkishin) questioned Asha (Tanisha Gorey) on where she was heading after seeing his daughter getting dressed up.

She then casually revealed she was heading out on a date with Nina (Mollie Gallagher) and calmly reassured her father she just liked ‘going out with people.’

Asha brushed off her father’s concerns after learning she was going on a date with a girl, and insisting she’d always be honest with him after splitting from her controlling ex-boyfriend Corey Brent.

Viewers praised the touching scenes for positively depicting Asha’s coming-out, with some saying they hoped it would inspired other LGBTQ teens to be open about their sexuality.

One wrote: ‘Don’t even watch #Corrie, but I just saw the Asha and Dev scene on YouTube and it was really nicely done. 

‘Asha liking someone who happens to be a girl and not agonising over it or being ashamed, just going with her feelings and being unconcerned about labels. The rep we need.’

Another added: ‘Don’t watch #Corrie much but seeing how open Asha was to Dev about her seeing Nina was so refreshing!’ 

For weeks fans have been hoping Nina and Asha’s friendship could blossom into romance, and on Monday’s the pair’s prayers were answered as they shared their first kiss in Roy’s cafe.

Nina was a huge support to Asha following her break-up with boyfriend Corey, and offered her plenty of reassurance after she tried to bleach her skin with lightening creams.

Coronation Street continues on Friday at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
