Fly tipping has rocketed during the coronavirus lockdown with cases doubling in the capital.

Locked down yobs are dumping their rubbish – including tyres and mattresses – because tips and recycling centres are shut.

Others are fly-tipping due to restricted bin collections due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shocking pictures show the great lengths people go to dump large piles of waste on country lanes, behind garages and even on city streets.

Among them include a pile of cardboard boxes dumped by a park fence with a bike as well as a pile of tree and bush cuttings.

Martin Montague, creator of the free ClearWaste.com fly-tipping reporting website and app, who took the photos said he had seen a 76 per cent increase in reports of fly-tipping from customers across the country.

But he said it has gone up by 100 per cent in some London boroughs.

He added: ‘Fly-tippers are using the fact that the tips are closed because of the Coronavirus situation to increase their criminal activities.

‘At the moment householders must store things they’d normally take to a tip.

‘They must not hand their unwanted stuff to just any person with a van who offers to remove it for them for a bit of cash.’

Michael Valenzia, regional director of the Country and Land Association (CLA), added: ‘It is shocking to hear reports of fly-tipping incidents especially at this time of lockdown.

‘The closure of tips is understandable, but can’t be used as an excuse to dump rubbish in our countryside.’
