This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman on THAT twist in the fifth season finale and what’s to come in season six: ‘Everything will be resolved’


This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman addressed the big wedding twist that left fans mouths agape during the fifth season finale, which aired Tuesday night on NBC.

In the episode – titled ‘The Adirondacks’ – a four-year time jump revealed Kate Pearson (Chrissy Metz) divorced husband Toby (Chris Sullivan) to marry her boss Phillip (Chris Geere).

‘We’ve hinted many times in the deeper future that something was amiss between [Kate] and [Toby],’ the 45-year-old showrunner told THR on Tuesday.

‘It’s been part of our plan all along. [That journey] is something we haven’t really done on this show yet and these two actors are going to have some really meaty stuff to dig into next year. 

‘Like everything on this show, I think we’re going to be able to find something difficult and find something beautiful inside.’

Dan said of the sixth and final season in 2022: ‘All of those timelines are going to be brought to completion and explained. There will be no looming questions when we get though the end of next season. Everything will be resolved.’

Fogelman revealed that some season six scenes have already been shot, and Mandy Moore – who plays Rebecca Pearson – ‘is going to have a tremendously ambitious season next year as an actress.’

The three-time Emmy nominee gushed: ‘As we’re traversing these timelines into the future and have a character battling Alzheimer’s, it’s going to be quite a showcase for [Moore], who I think is doing something extraordinary on television.’

In a new behind-the-scenes video about the final season, the 37-year-old Emmy-nominated actress said she was in ‘denial about it being the last season.’
