Queer As Folk has SECOND American reboot ordered straight to series

Queer As Folk has SECOND American reboot ordered straight to series… this time set in New Orleans and headed to NBC streamer Peacock

Cult classic British series Queer As Folk is getting another American reboot over two decades after the first US version went on the air.

The original Channel 4 version of the gay-themed show was set in Manchester, then an American version set in Pittsburgh aired on Showtime from 2000 to 2005.

And now yet another American edition of the series, this time based in New Orleans, has been ordered straight to series at Peacock, Deadline reports.

The original series was written by Russell T Davies who went onto become the showrunner of Doctor Who when it was revived in 2005.

Premiering in 1999 it starred Charlie Hunnam, Aidan Gillen and Craig Kelly amid a cast that included Maria Doyle Kennedy.

Charlie later found stardom in America on Sons Of Anarchy while Aidan became a famous face all over the world as Littlefinger on Game Of Thrones.

Russell’s version of the show only ran for a single eight-episode season on Channel 4 in 1999 with two specials released the following year.

In 2000 the American version began airing on Showtime as developed by the writing team of Ron Cowan and Daniel Lipman.

The Charlie Hunnam role went to Randy Harrison, the Aidan Gillen role to Gale Harold and the Craig Kelly role to Hal Sparks.

Few details have emerged on the upcoming New Orleans version except that the characters will be coping with a sad event and will be diverse.

Although the latest incarnation of the show was previously at Bravo it became a Peacock project in 2019 before getting ordered to series this year.

Stephen Dunn, who wrote and directed the film Closet Monster as well as an episode of Little America, is creating the new version.

‘It is a surreal honor to adapt the notoriously groundbreaking series by Russell T. Davies,’ gushed Stephen, who is also going to direct the pilot.

‘When the show originally aired, the idea of unapologetic queer stories on TV was so provocative that I felt I could only watch Queer as Folk in secret,’ he recalled.

‘But so much has changed in the last 20 years and how wonderful would it be if the next generation didn’t have to watch Queer As Folk alone in their dank basements with the sound muted, but with their family and friends and the volume cranked all the way to the max,’ said the writer.

Stephen is also currently working on an Amazon adaptation of an upcoming novel called Yes, Daddy by Jonathan Parks-Ramage.
