Jessica returned to Instagram in January, after 21 weeks of silence on the platform.

The post came five months after Karen’s death in August.

In that tribute, the Packed to the Rafters star shared a childhood photo of herself with her mother and sister at the beach.

Jessica’s family has experienced a lot of tragedy, as Jessica was just nine years old when she watched her father, university dean Tony Marais, die of a heart attack.

In August, Jessica’s friend and Packed to the Rafters co-star Hugh Sheridan confirmed her mother’s death on his Instagram page.

‘I’m grieving for my dearest and sweetest friend, who has now lost both of her parents far too young,’ he wrote at the time.

Actor Hugh, who has known Jessica since their university days, shared his memories of Karen and said how proud she was of her daughter.

‘We’ve helped each other through our lives changing in so many ways. Our wins and highs met extreme lows sometimes, but we always made it through,’ he wrote.

‘I can’t tell you how s**t I feel knowing I can’t hug you right now. To have distance between us when I want to be with you,’ added Hugh, who was living in Los Angeles at the time.

‘I love you, Jess. I’ll be back very soon and I will hug you for a very long time (after I get lot of quarantine).’

Jessica and Hugh made a name for themselves after appearing in hit Channel 7 drama, Packed To The Rafters, when it premiered in 2008.

However Marais stepped away from the forthcoming Amazon reboot of the show, titled Back to the Rafters, for ‘personal reasons’.

Actress Georgina Haig will assume the role of Rachel Rafter in the new series.
