Birds Eye issues urgent recall of chicken burgers amid fears they could contain pieces of red plastic

  • The firm’s packs of four chicken burgers with golden wholegrain recalled
  • Items could contain plastic and are unsafe to eat, says Food Standards Agency
  • Concerned shoppers should return them to stores immediately for a full refund

Birds Eye has urgently recalled one of its chicken products sold in stores across the country amid fears it could contain pieces of red plastic.

The alert was issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for the firm’s packs of four chicken burgers with golden wholegrain.

Shoppers have been urged to not eat them and instead return products to stores immediately for a full refund.

Some batches of Birds Eye’s packs of four chicken burgers are feared to contain pieces of red plastic

The FSA said: ‘Birds Eye is recalling 200g packs of four chicken burgers with golden wholegrain because they may contain pieces of red plastic.

‘The possible presence of plastic makes this product unsafe to eat.

‘If you have bought any of the above product, please do not consume them. Instead, return the packaging to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

‘Alternatively, take a photo of the packaging which shows the batch code and send this with your name, address and contact details to us via www.birdseye.co.uk/contact-us.

‘No other batch codes or other Birds Eye products are affected. Birds Eye apologises for any inconvenience caused.’

Tesco advertises the packs at £1.65 on its website.

Birds Eye issued a similar alert in October 2019, recalling 13,000 packs of chicken nuggets over fears they contained pieces of clear plastic.

The October 2019 alert involved frozen Birds Eye 790g packs of chicken nuggets with golden wholegrain that contained 50 pieces each, and cost between £3 and £4.

A spokesperson for Birds Eye said: ‘The safety of everyone who enjoys and loves our products are the utmost importance to us.

‘As soon we became aware of this issue with our Chicken Burgers, we immediately investigated and took precautionary action.’
