You won’t believe what R&B singer Selwyn looks like now… two decades after topping the Australian charts with Buggin’ Me and Rich Girl

He was one of Australia’s most popular R&B singers in the early 2000s thanks to hit singles like Buggin’ Me and Rich Girl.

And almost two decades since his rise to fame, Selwyn, now aged 38, has barely aged a day since his time in the spotlight.

Photos of the South African-born singer taken in recent years show that the former hitmaker still looks relatively the same.

Selwyn first entered the public eye as a shy 17-year-old on the second season of the reality TV singing competition Popstars.

He was approached to do the show by a music producer while working as a trolley boy at a local supermarket.

‘I was pushin’ trolleys and [producer Audius Mtawarira] heard me singin’ out loud,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2002.

‘I took his number down and then we hooked up – and from there we started workin’ together, man … And everything I touch turns to gold now!’

Although he didn’t make it into the show’s manufactured pop group Scandal’Us, he was able to launch a successful solo career off the back of the series.

His debut single, Buggin’ Me, was released in 2001 and immediately reached the top 20 on Australia’s ARIA charts.

He followed it up with two more hits, Way Love’s Supposed To Be and Rich Girl, both of which reached the top ten.

His first three singles were all certified gold, as was his debut album, Meant To Be, which reached No. 7 on the charts.

‘Everyone still remembered me from the TV show and I had this good record that was out with a couple of good hits and everywhere I went people just knew me,’ he told news.com.au in 2016.

‘I couldn’t go out for a drink or anything. It was overwhelming.’

While his success on the charts diminished after that, he made a brief comeback in 2004 with the single Boomin, which hit No. 28.

He’s since returned to a normal life, working different jobs including a forklift driver in a warehouse and cold caller for a charity.

In 2017, he was convicted of assaulting his pregnant partner following a family argument at their baby shower.

He plead guilty to a host of charges including assault, intimidation and breaching an apprehended violence order, according to the Illawarra Mercury.

Selwyn attempted to make a comeback in early 2019 with the hip-hop single YoYo.
