City of Lies trailer follows Johnny Depp as he tries to solve the murders of Tupac and Biggie

Johnny Depp delves into the mystery behind the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. in the new trailer for City of Lies.

Depp filmed the movie back in 2017, with the first trailer released back in May 2018, though the film was pulled from its release, reportedly due to a lawsuit filed against Depp by a location manager on the film.

Now Saban Films has acquired the long-delayed film, and set it for release in theaters on March 19, followed by a digital and on-demand release on April 9, with the studio releasing a new poster as well.

The trailer was released by Saban Films on Tuesday, which marks the 24th anniversary of Notorious B.I.G.’s death, at just 24 years of age.

The trailer opens with the murder of Notorious B.I.G., which happened outside of the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, following an after party for the Soul Train Music Awards.

Russell Poole (Depp) has a chat with Jack Jackson, who mentions he was the lead detective on the Biggie Smalls murder case 20 years prior.

The trailer also features news footage which suggests that the rapper (real name Christopher Wallace) was killed in retaliation for the murder of Tupac Shakur in September 1996.

Poole is seen rounding up some suspects, while Jackson tells Poole, ‘Biggie didn’t have Tupac killed.’

Poole is also seen talking to another character, Tyrell (Dominique Columbus), who says, ‘A couple of brothers gets shot and nobody gives a damn, do they?’

After the film was originally pulled from its 2018 date, there was a report that claimed Depp’s legal troubles were serving as a ‘scapegoat’ for the film’s delay, and that it was actually being ‘suppressed’ by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Another report from last year claimed the film was shelved so Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, couldn’t re-open her son’s murder case and sue the L.A.P.D.

The film did get a limited release in January 2019, though now fans around the world will get to see it on March 19 in theaters and April 9 on VOD/digital.
