Following new rules implemented in February, all arrivals have to take three gold-standard PCR coronavirus tests before being allowed to freely move around the UK.

All incomers from ‘red list’ countries must stay in the rooms for 10 days, costing £1,750 each – with a supplement for people sharing rooms – including food and drink and their testing bill.

Arrivals from dozens of high-risk countries on the ‘red list’ have to test negative 72 hours before travelling, and then be screened again twice, on day two and day eight.

Failure to stick to the hotel quarantine will be punishable with a fine of up to £10,000, Mr Hancock said.

How the new border rules work

HOTEL QUARANTINE

Arrivals from Red List nations have to quarantine at a Government-designated hotel for 10 days.

It will cost the travellers £1,750 each, although the Government is paying the upfront cost and bills them afterwards.

Attempts to break out of the quarantine before the 10 days could result in a fine of up to £10,000.

They are not eligible for the five-day ‘test and release’  scheme.

REPEATED COVID TESTS

Red List arrivals are required to test negative for coronavirus 72 hours before departure, using a kit that meets UK government standards.

They are tested again on day two and day eight of quarantine, with costs included in the wider charge of the hotel stay.

NON-RED LIST ARRIVALS

The same requirement for a negative test result 72 hours before departure applies.

Once in the UK, they must isolate for 10 days at home or in private accommodation, with the authorities able to check that they are obeying the rules.

Tests are required on day two and day eight of isolation, and must be booked through a government portal in advance of travel.

PCR tests typically cost around £120 a time.

TEST AND RELEASE

The test and release scheme – allows non-‘red list travellers’ to leave isolation if they test negative after five days. Many essential business travellers are likely to take this option.

However, Mr Hancock suggested even though they will not be subject to quarantine after the five-day test, they are still required to have tests on day two and days eight.

Meanwhile, all other travellers also have to show a negative result before coming to the UK, and then face two more tests while isolating at home or in other private accommodation.

The government has not said how much that will cost although typically it is around £120 per test.

The test and release scheme – which allows non-‘red list travellers’ to leave isolation if they test negative after five days is in place.

However, Mr Hancock suggested even though they are not be subject to quarantine after the five-day test, they are still required to have tests on day two and days eight. That means they could be screened four times in total.

Scotland announced in February it would go even further and require hotel quarantine for all arrivals.

Despite recent measures limiting international travel, Priyanka announced she will be opening her own restaurant called SONA, across the pond in New York.

The 38-year-old actress made the news public by posting a trio of images to her Instagram account on Saturday.

Priyanka wrote a lengthy message in the post’s caption where she expressed enthusiasm over her new business venture, which is based at 36 East 20th Street in the city’s Flatiron district.

She began her message by writing, ‘I’m thrilled to present to you SONA, a new restaurant in NYC that I poured my love for Indian food into.’

She then explained the concept behind her restaurant and noted that ‘SONA is the very embodiment of timeless India and the flavours I grew up with.’

The Isn’t It Romantic actress emphasised that she aimed to take diners ‘on a food journey through my amazing country.’

Priyanka also included two photos from a puja that had been held in the restaurant’s space in 2019; her husband, Nick, was featured in one of the snaps.

The same day, the star’s business partner Maneesh K. Goyal made a post to his own Instagram account to make his feelings about the soon-to-open restaurant known.

The restauranteur stressed that SONA was not planned out by one person in particular and wrote that ‘Opening a restaurant is a team effort for sure.’

He then spoke about Priyanka’s dedication to providing a space for her culture to be appreciated, writing that ‘There is no one who better—and more boldly—personifies “global Indian” than Pri.’

Maneesh also noted that the actress was very hands-on while the restaurant’s concept was being developed.

‘From the design, to the menu, to the music, to even the name, Priyanka has her fingerprints all over SONA,’ he wrote.
