  • Trendsetters took to Instagram to mock the made to order footwear

MSCHF have been ridiculed across social media after announcing the release of Birkenstock-style sandals made from Hermes Birkin bags.

The Brooklyn-based collective who previously shocked trendsetters with the ‘Jesus Shoe’, a Nike trainer with Holy water from the River Jordan in the sole released its latest high-end shoe in preparation for spring.

Trendsetters have taken to Instagram admitting they’re less than impressed by the $76,000 Birkenstock sandals, made from destroyed Birkin bags, saying the design is similar to shoes they’ve seen their dad wearing since the nineties.

Despite the sole being made from Birkenstock and the leather upper created using chopped up Hermès Birkin bags, the footwear hasn’t been approved by either brand according to the New York Times.

Daniel Greenberg, 23, who is head of strategy at MSCHF, explained the design to the publication saying: ‘We’re just sort of fascinated with destroying expensive things and creating something new out of them.’

The collective who purchased four Birkin bags to create the shoes, have revealed the sandals will be made to order and available only while supplies last.

Rapper Future, took to Instagram wearing a pair for $48,000, while MSCHF have said customers can purchase the style costing from $34,000 to $76,000.

The styles currently available include a burgundy colour made from porosus crocodile and black option made from ostrich.

Social media users have been less than impressed by the exotic and exclusive footwear, arguing: ‘These are horrible but people will buy them because they are designer and expensive’

One person wrote: ‘My uncle been wearing this with his dry foot since the 90s’

‘Our dads started this trend first. NEXT,’ another joked.

A third said: ‘5 minutes in Deptford Market and I would have found this for £3.99’

Another added: ‘In 2021 can we all agree that putting a name on something don’t make it fashion?’

According to Lukas Bentel, 28, who is a creative director at MSCHF, the shoes were deliberately designed to spark conversation about how Birkin bags are viewed as a symbol for wealth, meanwhile Birkenstock shoes are relatively accessible.

American singer Kehlani and an unnamed art collector have already purchased pairs.

MSCHF gained a cult following in recent years with their ‘Jesus shoe’ selling out almost instantly when it was debuted for $3,000 in 2019.

Stars including Damien Hirst and Drake are also among celebrity fans of their quirky designs.
