‘A brave, honest, strong soul and friend xx.’

Derek, 53, was hospitalised in March 2020 after testing positive for the illness and was later put into an induced coma, which he awoke from in July. He is now continuing to recover in hospital.

Kate has spoken in-depth about her husband in the March issue of Good Housekeeping, admitting she is struggling as a single parent.

The presenter has continued with her work on Good Morning Britain and Heart Radio while caring for her two children in the midst of Derek’s battle with coronavirus.

She revealed doctors had told her Derek’s infection was the ‘highest they had seen in a patient who had lived’ following his diagnosis with the virus.

When asked how she is coping looking after their children Darcey, 14, and William, 11, Kate said: ‘I’m not sure I am coping! I honestly don’t know how single mums do it; it’s just so hard.

‘A lot of the time I find myself thinking, ‘What would Derek say?’ and ‘What would Derek do?’

‘I’m lucky that I’m being supported by lots of friends too, and Ranvir has been really helpful because she’s been operating as a single mum since her son, Tushaan, was very little.

‘I asked her, ‘How do you do it?’ and she said, ‘You just have to accept that you can do everything.’

Kate has also credited her stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2019 with ‘preparing her to get through’ Derek’s Covid battle.

She continued: ‘Forcing myself to do frightening things in the jungle was definitely good for my soul, and it made me believe I could do things I never dreamed possible.

‘And flippin’ heck! I’ve had to put that knowledge into practice, haven’t I? So actually, maybe the jungle prepared me for getting through this.’

Kate also credited her time on the ITV show with helping her make some healthy changes, saying she now drinks lots of hot water, after not being allowed tea in the jungle, which makes a ‘big difference’ to how she feels.

She added: ‘The last thing Darcey, Billy or Derek need is me getting sick. I’m not doing as much exercise as I’d like, but… strange as it sounds, I drink a lot of hot water.’

The mother-of-two appeared on I’m A Celebrity in 2019 alongside Myles Stephenson, Caitlyn Jenner and Jacqueline Jossa. She finished the show in fourth place.

Derek was waiting for Kate as she came out of the jungle in December, mere months before his coronavirus battle began.
