A man has been arrested after a fight at Sainsbury’s left one worker in hospital and saw a woman slapped in the face.

Footage taken at the Clapham High Street supermarket this afternoon showed a customer appear to slap a security worker in the face after he had been dragged out of the store.

Moments later, other members of staff drag him to the ground and one appears to punch him.

It is believed the altercation began after the man was abusive to staff.

Tonight, Met Police announced a 38-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault and a racially aggravated public order offence.

One onlooker was forced to sit on the shopper to restrain him as they waited for police to arrive to the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Clapham, South London, on Sunday afternoon

The incident allegedly started at the self-checkout counter after a male customer was ‘abusive’ to staff, according to a female Sainsbury’s team member.

In the footage, filmed at around 4pm today, the customer can be seen having a heated argument with staff members – which quickly escalates into a fight.

The four individuals can be seen arguing by the self-checkout of the supermarket, before several team members drag the man to the exit, at which point he stumbles and falls to the ground.

The altercation began near the Sainsbury’s supermarket’s self-checkouts, after the customer was said to be abusive towards staff

The customer, who did not appear to be wearing a mask, repeatedly cried for the police to be called, before staff dragged him out of the supermarket this afternoon

The conversation continues outside, where at one point, the man slaps what appears to be a female Sainsbury’s worker.

The male workers jump on top of him and wrestle him to the ground.

A witness at the scene said: ‘He was shouting but I don’t think it’s fair how he is being handled.

‘He says he hasn’t done anything and isn’t being violent or aggressive, but several security guards tackled him.’

Seconds later, staff manage to throw the shopper to the ground on Clapham High Street

Another male, a Sainsbury’s member of staff, appears to strike the man as he laid on the floor

Staff and onlookers were trying to apprehend the customer as they waited for police to arrive

A spokesman from Met Police said: ‘Police were called at 4.12pm on Sunday to reports of a disturbance at a shop on Clapham High Street.

‘Officers attended and were informed that three members of staff had been assaulted by a customer. One member of staff was taken to hospital for treatment.

‘A 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and a racially aggravated public order offence. He was taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.’
