Saint Dévote’s Day is a national holiday in Monaco and celebrates its patron saint, a Christian martyr who was killed and tortured for her faith in the 4th century.

The municipality’s residents burn a boat every year in honour of the legend that Devota, a young Christian women from Corsica, was martyed by the Prefect Barbarus under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian.

It is said that her body was removed by believers during the night after her martyrdom, placed on a boat, and taken to Monaco to be entombed in a chapel in 303AD.

Both twins charmed the crowds with their vigorous waves.

Earlier today Prince Albert revealed his wife Charlene’s 43rd birthday today will be an intimate ‘family affair’.

According to the royal the couple are set to celebrate the big day today in a low-key way with their twin children Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, both six.

Prince Albert has said the former Olympic swimmer will spend the day surrounded by family, but explained gatherings would be in low-key amid the Covid-19 crisis, telling People magazine: ‘She doesn’t like big celebrations.’

He revealed the family party would likely be subdued to the Covid-19 restrictions preventing groups of more than six gathering.
