Monty Python’s hit Broadway musical Spamalot is now being made into a movie from a script by Python troupe legend Eric Idle
The hit Broadway musical — Monty Python’s Spamalot — is being made into a feature film.
Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to the musical comedy — that’s adapted from the 1975 film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail — with a screenplay written by legendary troupe member Eric Idle.
Because the picture has already been fully developed, it is set to go straight into casting and begin filming this year, according to Deadline.
Hilarious musical comedy: The hit Broadway musical — Monty Python’s Spamalot — is being made into a feature film; the 2005 Broadway production starred Tim Curry as King Arthur
Idle also wrote the lyrics to the songs and collaborated with John DuPrez on the most of the music.
Casey Nicholaw, who choreographed the original Tony-winning musical when it was on Broadway, is set to direct the highly irreverent parody of King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail, although it differs from the film in many ways.
Nicholaw’s Broadway credits as a director and choreographer also include Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Mean Girls, The Prom, The Drowsy Chaperone and Something Rotten!
Original Python troupe member Eric Idle wrote the script, co-wrote the music and will also serve as a producer; the comic legend is pictured in February 2019
Idle will also produce the film alongside Oscar-winning producer Dan Jinks, who is also currently working on a new film adaptation of the beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof.
The original 2005 stage production, directed by Mike Nichols, received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning in three categories, including Best Musical.
Tim Curry starred as King Arthur with David Hyde Pierce, Hank Azaria and Sara Ramirez, who went on to win the Tony Award For Best Featured Actress In A Musical.
Classic: Spamalot was adapted from the 1975 film — Monty Python and the Holy Grail — which starred Idle, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin
Like the movie, the musical tackles the legend of King Arthur, with full tongue in cheek from the movie, and features many classic moments from the Python film
Premiering in April 1975, the movie has since gone on to become a seminal comic film that’s considered among the best of all time. Along with Idle, it starred Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, among others.
The adaption project comes from Fox, where both chairman/CEO Jim Gianopulos and Motion Pictures Group president Emma Watts were when it landed at Paramount.
On the fast track: The film version of Spamalot is already fully developed, so it’s set to go straight into casting and begin filming this year
