Channel Nine will revive classic game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? with Eddie McGuire returning as host

Channel Nine will be reviving its classic game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? this year.

The original format aired from 1999 until 2010 before it was replaced by a spin-off called ‘Millionaire Hot Seat’.

The popular game show is set to return to screens in January and a sneak peek into the new season has confirmed Eddie McGuire will be returning as host.

The new trailer begins with an image of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge before hundreds of banknotes fly past.

A voice-over says: ‘We’re kicking off the year with event television that will sweep the nation. Australia’s favourite game show is back.’

Former host Eddie McGuire is then seen sitting on the set of the show and adds: ‘The greatest quiz show on the planet is back with prime time special events.’

‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? special events coming in January on Nine.’

The Nine game show offers contestants the opportunity to win up to $1 million by answering increasingly difficult multiple-choice questions.

In 2009, the show moved to a fast-paced version known as Millionaire Hot Seat.

Millionaire Hot Seat has been losing viewers since September 2015, when game show The Chase premiered on Seven.

Nine tried to shake things up in 2017 by extending the program to an hour and quickening the pace with the inclusion of the Fastest Finger First Round.

But despite these changes, The Chase still remains No. 1 by a significant margin.
