Christopher Biggins praises Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott calling him ‘a saint’

Christopher Biggins has praised Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell, 57, calling him ‘a saint’ during an interview on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain.

The pantomime icon, 72, also revealed that he believes the late star would have been ‘thrilled’ with the reaction to her death as the ‘coverage was unbelievable’. 

EastEnders and Carry On star Barbara died at aged 83 following her battle with Alzheimer’s disease on December 10.

Candidly discussing his late friend’s death with hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Alex Beresford, Christopher agreed that the news of her loss was ‘devastating’.

He said: ‘It’s the saddest thing ever, she’s so lost. I hope that when we die we can see the reaction of everybody to our death, she would have been so thrilled. 

‘The coverage was unbelievable. She was an extraordinary woman and Scott her husband is extraordinary man, he’s a saint.

‘It’s sad and terrible but she was a special woman and everybody loved her.’

Scott and Barbara married in 2000 and he was her primary carer during her later life and battle with the disease.

Christopher also discussed how Barbara’s funeral in January, where he’s doing a reading, will be a tough day for everyone. 

‘It’ll be very difficult, especially for Scott but it’s good to say goodbye properly. And next year, or sometime in the future, I’m sure thousands of people will be invited to a memorial service for he,’ he said. 

Dame Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014 and made the news public in 2018.   

The NHS website states: Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia in the UK.

Dementia is a syndrome (a group of related symptoms) associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. It can affect memory, thinking skills and other mental abilities.

Barbara went into a care home earlier in the year as her health deteriorated.      

Christopher also discussed how he believes the shutting down of theatres staging pantomimes this Christmas is ‘disgusting’ while on GMB.  

He said: ‘The only year I didn’t do a panto was after winning the jungle [I’m A Celebrity in 2007] and I couldn’t get back in time. 

‘The London Palladium did six performances this year and then the government took them off. It was disgusting… it was safe the Palladium, it’s tragic the whole thing.’ 

Theatres and public spaces have had to close again with the introduction of new coronavirus restrictions, with London’s West End being plunged into Tier 4. 

Although not appearing in a panto in person this season, Christopher will be playing The Good Fairy in a Magic Radio show on Christmas Day. 

He revealed that Ronan Keating and Rick Astley will also make guest appearances during the special which will be on at 7pm. 

Christopher added that he wasn’t too devastated at the thought of a year off, saying he won’t be getting dressed up for Christmas.

‘Quite frankly at my age to put fishnet tights and makeup on… I’ll enjoy the rest!’, he joked. 

As for the COVID-19 vaccine, Christopher said he was shocked that some people wouldn’t want to take it.

He said: ‘I can’t believe some people don’t want it, why would they spend so much time making it and people say no? You have to look to the future.’ 

Christopher also revealed details of Barbara’s funeral while appearing on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch last Thursday.  

He said he had spoken to Scott and revealed: ‘I’m very honoured because you can only have 30 people at the funeral, and I am one of the speakers.  

‘Anna Karen is speaking about her early life, I’m speaking about the middle part of her life and Ross [Kemp] from EastEnders is talking about that part of her life. 

‘It will be very, very sad. I wish there was a way that we could record it so people can watch it online. It’s going to be a terrible day, it’s in January but we’re all there for him and for her. She was very special.’
