‘It’s a boring story. I was in the office of someone who sells film rights. I was thrilled.’

Richard did say that he has already had a zoom call with Spielberg, as he explained: ‘There’s been lots of chats about it. Spielberg has to cast it.’

Going on to detail the plot of The Thursday Murder Club, and why it is such a hit, he added: ‘It’s about four people in their seventies. They meet up once a week to solve unsolved murders and one week, there’s a murder on their doorstep.

‘I think the fact the heroes are in their seventies, they are overlooked and underestimated. It’s not cute and cosy. I think it’s been a tough year, 2020.

‘We don’t quite know what’s going to happen. In a crime book, you know on page 350 there will be a solution and I think that’s really comforting for people.’

Piers asked if he had a dream cast in mind for the film, but Richard admitted he couldn’t imagine anyone as his characters as they ‘are very real’ to him.

‘The idea it might be Dame Judi Dench or Julie Walters or Meryl Streep is ridiculous,’ he explained.
