Ilana Glazer and Justin Theroux’s fertility thriller False Positive lands at Hulu

Ilana Glazer’s feature writing and producing debut, the fertility thriller False Positive, has found a home at Hulu.

Glazer co-wrote the film with John Lee, who directed six episodes of Glazer’s hit Comedy Central series Broad City, with Hulu setting a 2021 release, via Variety.

Glazer also stars in the film alongside Justin Theroux and Pierce Brosnan, which was described as a contemporary take on the horror classic Rosemary’s Baby.

The story follows Glazer’s character Lucy, who has tried to get pregnant several times with her partner Adrian (Justin Theroux).

The couple’s luck has seemingly turned around after they find the ‘perfect fertility doctor,’ Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan), and they ultimately have a baby girl.

After their first child was born, though Lucy begins to suspect sinister intentions by Hindle and seeks to find the truth about him. 

The cast also includes Gretchen Mol, Sophia Bush and Josh Hamilton, with production starting in April 2019. 

Lee directs from the script he co-wrote with Glazer, with both producing alongside Jonathan Wang (Swiss Army Man).

Shortly after production wrapped last June, Glazer opened up about the project on Variety’s Big Ticket podcast with Marc Malkin.

‘It’s going to be insane. It’s about the patriarchy…as expressed through medicine,’ Glazer said on the podcast.

The Hulu deal for False Positive also extends ties between indie movie studio A24 and Hulu, a pact which includes the hit TV series Ramy.

Hulu’s original film slate has grown considerably this year, with critically-acclaimed films such as Palm Springs, Bad Hair, Happiest Season and Run. 

Glazer’s hit series Broad City, which she starred in and co-created with Abbi Jacobson, ended its five season run on Comedy Central in 2019.

She is also set to star in the comedy ensemble series The Afterparty, following the same night told through multiple characters’ perspectives.

Theroux will next be seen in Violet and he’s currently filming a TV series adaptation of The Mosquito Coast, based on the novel written by his uncle Paul Theroux.
