Reversing FAIL: Panicky learner driver backs into parked car and writes it off after taking wrong turn into cul de sac

  • Young male learner driver reversed into parked black BMW in Lincoln, East Mids.
  •  Footage shows him headed for the vehicle but he does not adjust his steering
  •  Smashes into back of the car, jolting it forward and causing extensive damage
  • Owner of the BMW,  Robertas Raisuotis, said his insurers have now written it off

A nervous learner driver reversed at speed into a parked BMW and wrote it off after he took a wrong turn and ended up in a cul-de-sac.

Footage captured on what appears to be a video doorbell or home security camera showed how the crash unfolded on December 10 in Lincoln, East Midlands.

A white Audi A1 can be seen passing through the residential street, driven by a man in his late teens and believed to be under the supervision of his mother.

He then drives to the far end of the street and but soon realises it is a dead end – choosing to reverse instead of doing a three-point turn at the end of the Y shaped cul-de-sac.

Initially all appears to be going well, however he then seems to get over confident as he puts his foot down.

It soon becomes clear that he is headed straight for the parked car but does not adjust his steering wheel.

He then crashes into the black BMW M3 owned by Robertas Raisuotis, with the force of the impact strong enough to move the 1600kg sports car several feet.

A young male learner driver, believed to be accompanied by his mother, was seen reversing his car at speed after taking a wrong turn before smashing into a parked BMW in Lincoln, East Midlands

The collision caused extensive damage to the rear of the vehicle.

Mr Raisuotis cut the clip as the driver begins to drive forward but said his wife then ran out of their house after hearing the bang.

The red faced learner exchanged insurance details and was relieved to discover the damage to his Audi was minor in comparison.

Robertas, 34, later shared the footage on a Facebook dash cam group he simply wrote: ‘Seriously?’

Adrian Miah said: ‘Maybe his ‘L’ plate was blocking his view.’

Tom Wilkinson commented: ‘Someone doesn’t understand reversing using mirrors is back to front’

James Aubrey added: ‘He must have been reversing at a fair old whack, to knock that car forward.’

Unfortunately, Robertas’s insurers have written off his 2009 M3 as a category N, which means even though there is no apparent structural damage – the vehicle is still uneconomical to repair.

In 2017 the DVSA removed the ‘reverse around a corner’ and ‘turn-in-the-road’ manoeuvres from the test, but they insist that driving instructors should still teach them.
