Emma Roberts: ‘At 16, I thought, by the time I’m 24, I’ll be married with kids’

Emma Roberts wanted to become a mother at the young age of 24.

But traveling for work kept her from establishing stable relationships. In the past she has dated Alex Pettyfer, Chord Overstreet and Evan Peters, and now is having her first child, a son, with Garrett Hedlund.

‘At 16, I thought, “By the time I’m 24, I’ll be married with kids.” And then I was 24 and I was like, “Remember when I said I would be married with kids by now?”‘ the movie star told Cosmopolitan.

Support group: Then she was brought into ‘a new world of conversation about endometriosis, infertility, miscarriages, fear of having kids.’ The Nancy Drew actress said: ‘I was so grateful to find out I was not alone in this. I hadn’t done anything “wrong” after all’

The cover girl said that constant travel for her career kept her from her dreams of pursuing a family.

The niece of Julia Roberts started working at age six.

She had the memorable role as Johnny Depp’s young daughter Kristina Jung in the 2001 cocaine movie Blow.

She also popped up in aunt Julia’s comedy America’s Sweethearts with Catherine Zeta-Jones that same year.

In 2004 she landed her TV show Unfabulous where she played Addie Singer, and films like Aquamarine and Nancy Drew followed.

A strain: 'When I found out about my fertility, I was kind of stunned,' she said. 'It felt so permanent, and oddly, I felt like I had done something wrong'

As an adult she worked on the films Palo Alto, Adult World and Billionaire Boys Club.

In 2013 Roberts went back to TV as she starred as Brooke Thompson on American Horror Story then can the series Scream Queens on which she played Chanel Oberlin.

Emma’s next movie is Holidate: ‘The script came along and I remember thinking, This is what I want to do. I want to make a movie like this. It’s nostalgic; it’s romantic; it’s fun.’

The brunette beauty added: ‘I love serious work, but sometimes, you just want to laugh and watch a movie 10 times in a row, and that’s okay.’

Her journey to pregnancy was not easy, the actress told Cosmopolitan.

She had a fertility struggle and was told to freeze her eggs after a doctor informed her she had undiagnosed endometriosis: ‘I felt like I had done something wrong,’ said Roberts who has been acting since age six.

Roberts stated she thinks she had endometriosis when she was a teen and it was never dealt with.

When she was diagnosed, her doctor added that endometriosis causes problems with fertility. She was then told she probably needed to freeze her eggs and she did so.

‘When I found out about my fertility, I was kind of stunned,’ she said. ‘It felt so permanent, and oddly, I felt like I had done something wrong.’

A new Emma: 'To see my body change inside and out so drastically has been a wild experience. Surprising and beautiful,' Roberts added. 'Then again, some days I feel like I'm being hijacked by something'

WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Endometriosis is a disease in which the endometrium (the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus or womb) is present outside of the uterus.

Endometriosis most commonly occurs in the lower abdomen or pelvis, but it can appear anywhere in the body.

Symptoms of endometriosis include lower abdominal pain, pain with menstrual periods, pain with sexual intercourse, and difficulty getting pregnant.

On the other hand, some women with endometriosis may not have any symptoms at all.

Approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women have endometriosis. However, the true prevalence is unknown since the diagnosis requires laparoscopy to visualize and biopsy endometriosis lesions.

Endometriosis is seen in 12-32% of women having surgery for pelvic pain, and in up to 50% of women having surgery for infertility.

She said she got pregnant when she stopped thinking about her fertility issues.

‘It sounds cheesy, but the moment that I stopped thinking about it, we got pregnant,’ she revealed.

But Roberts was not comfortable sharing the news with her fans right away because she worried something could go wrong.

‘So I kept it to myself, my family, and my partner, not wanting to make grand plans if it wasn’t going to work out,’ she said.

‘This pregnancy made me realize that the only plan you can have is that there is no plan.’

Now she feels ‘hungry and tired’: ‘Food and sleep do not abide by the normal laws when you’re pregnant,’ she continued.

‘But I’m healthy, which is the thing I’m most grateful for.’

‘To see my body change inside and out so drastically has been a wild experience. Surprising and beautiful,’ Roberts added. ‘Then again, some days I feel like I’m being hijacked by something.’

And the interview was conducted by her friend, novelist Stephanie Danler.
