Kristen Stewart pretends to be ‘orphan’ for closeted girlfriend in first trailer for Happiest Season

Twilight alum Kristen Stewart is forced to pretend to be a ‘straight orphan’ for her closeted girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) in the first trailer for Happiest Season, which dropped Monday.

In Clea DuVall’s PG-13 holiday rom-com, Harper waits until they’re about to pull up to her conservative Christian family’s house to tell Abby (Stewart) to put on the ridiculous ruse.

And Harper’s politician father Ted (Victor Garber) and homemaker mother Tipper (Mary Steenburgen) seemingly fall for it.

Preview dropped Monday! Twilight alum Kristen Stewart (L) is forced to pretend to be a ‘straight orphan’ for her closeted girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) in the first trailer for Happiest Season

Meet the Parents-style hijinks ensue when the lesbian couple attempt to sneak a sleepover – just like many unwed couples have tried before them over the holidays.

Harper is forced to hide behind a door in her bra when her parents unexpectedly greet Abby in the guest/storage room.

Schitt’s Creek creator-star Dan Levy easily steals every scene he’s in as Abby’s flamboyant GBF John who, like the audience, is confounded by the entire set-up.

In an attempt to ‘rescue’ Abby, John shows up to the house pretending to be her ex-boyfriend who’s ‘very sexually attracted to her – a female.’

After Harper’s mother exits, John quips: ‘I nailed that, and she is fabulous!’

When Abby confronts Harper about how ‘painful’ it feels to be ‘hidden,’ she cries: ‘I am not hiding you! I am hiding me. I am scared that if I tell them who I really am, I will lose them.’

John then attempts to explain Harper’s attitude: ‘Everybody’s story is different. Just because Harper isn’t ready doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you.’

And judging solely by the wrap photo from February 28 – ‘a few days before lockdown’ – everything turns out great for the gang waving signs and rainbow pride flags.

‘I think I’ve wished to see a gay Christmas rom-com my whole life. I’m so happy and proud of Clea for bringing this into the world,’ the 30-year-old César Award winner – who came out as bisexual in 2013 – told People in September.

‘I love when holiday movie makes you long for an idea of home, but also examines how hilarious and hard reality at home can be sometimes.’

The Pittsburgh-set, gay-friendly flick starts streaming November 25 on Hulu and hits UK theaters on November 27.

The Happiest Season original soundtrack was released last Friday through Warner Records and it features songs from Tegan and Sara, Bebe Rexha, Sia, and more.
