Iceland issues recall notice for its French versions of Twix ice creams as traces of allergens including milk, gluten and soya do not appear in English on the label

  • Products could pose a serious risk to those with gluten, lactose and nut allergies
  • An anaphylactic shock is the most serious allergic reaction and can cause death
  • Blunder was spotted by rival supermarket Sainsbury’s who alerted Anaphylaxis Campaign

A supermarket chain has issued a serious health risk warning to customers and called for an urgent recall for its French versions of Twix Barres Glacées ice cream bars.

Iceland has recalled the product because the bars contain milk, wheat, gluten and soya – none of which are mentioned in English on the label.

The blunder was picked up by rival supermarket Sainsbury’s who alerted  Anaphylaxis Campaign, which helps sufferers, to the safety warning.

If consumed, people can expose themselves to a number of symptoms ranging from skin rashes and blotches to having trouble breathing and even unconsciousness.

Those suffering from anaphylaxis are at a greater risk because it’s potentially a life-threatening allergic reaction affecting more than one body system such as the airways, heart, circulation, gut and skin.

The most serious allergic reaction of them all is an anaphylactic shock which can cause death without prompt medical attention within minutes of exposure to the allergen.

Iceland have urged its shoppers to check their freezers and return the product immediately to one of their stores. They said a full refund will be given and no receipt is needed.

A spokesman for the Anaphylaxis Campaign, which helps sufferers, revealed Sainsbury’s alerted them to the safety warning.

The society said ‘Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction affecting more than one body system.

A spokesperson said: ‘Symptoms can start within seconds or minutes of exposure to the food or substance you are allergic to and usually will progress rapidly. On rare occasions there may be a delay in the onset of a few hours.

‘The common causes include foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, sesame seeds and kiwi fruit, although many other foods have been known to trigger anaphylaxis.

‘There may also be a dramatic fall in blood pressure (anaphylactic shock).
