The journalist, 76, told his singer pal John, 71, that the song’s lyrics didn’t make sense, and advised him against recording it.

John played Derryn the song at the Melbourne studio where it was recorded and asked, ‘What do you think?’ Derryn told The Herald Sun on Saturday.

The star presented the track to record company head honchos in 1989, hoping he could record it for his 1990 album, Rise.

‘As I recall, they heard it, looked at me and thought: ‘I wonder why he’s picked this one?” he said.

Daryl added: ‘But I convinced them that we should record it, and the rest is history.’

Hard sell: The powers that be were less than impressed - leaving Daryl to go to bat for the track. 'As I recall, they heard it, looked at me and thought: 'I wonder why he's picked this one?'' Daryl is pictured in the 1990 video for The Horses
