2GB’s Ray Hadley enjoys a popularity surge in the radio ratings

2GB radio host Ray Hadley may not have taken over Alan Jones’ coveted early morning breakfast gig this year, however he’s now enjoying a popularity surge.

The latest radio survey results reveal that Ray, 66, not only achieved a per cent share greater than fellow breakfast host Ben Fordham, but also increased his share in the Brisbane market. 

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, the veteran broadcaster said that while the win is ‘gratifying’, it’s most likely due to interest in the Queensland election and the coronavirus pandemic. 

‘The public was desperate for information and they turned to us – that’s the key difference,’ he said.

‘I may never again achieve a 14 share in the Brisbane market, but it’s very nice to have done it the once.’   

The latest radio survey results, published last week, reveal that Ray achieved a 17.2 per cent share over Ben Fordham’s 16.1 per cent share.

Ray also achieved a 14 point share in Brisbane, highlighting an increase of 2.7 points from the last survey results.   

Speaking to 2GB’s Jim Wilson in September, Ray, who has won 20 major ACRA Radio awards since 1987, recalled the ‘greatest moment’ of his broadcasting career.

Ray reflected on the moment 20 years ago when 400m sprinter Cathy Freeman won gold at the Sydney Olympic Games.  

‘I’ve been fortunate; I’ve been to all parts of the world calling rugby league, and I went to six Olympic Games, and four or five Commonwealth Games,’ he said.

‘I’ve called plenty of sport, but that is etched in my memory as the greatest moment in my broadcasting career.’
