Elisabeth Moss, Carey Mulligan and Rachel Brosnahan lead stars at AFI Fest Indie Contenders Panel

The annual AFI Fest is taking place in Los Angeles.

But in the time of pandemic, the event’s flagship Indie Contenders Panel went virtual this year with ticket-holders being able to watch remotely as eight performers answered questions about their 2020 roles.

The eight identified by AFI as giving award-worthy performances in the past year were Riz Ahmed, Rachel Brosnahan, Winston Duke, Julia Garner, Vanessa Kirby , Elisabeth Moss, Carey Mulligan and Andy Samberg.

The Handmaid’s Tale star Moss was the only actress to be singled out for two performances.  

Moss, 38, starred in the female-led reboot of The Invisible Man for Universal and played horror writer Shirley Jackson in the period film Shirley.

British actress Mulligan, 35, was chosen for her role in the yet to be released Promising Young Woman.

In the revenge thriller, she plays a young woman who seeks out to wreak vengeance on others for the traumatic event in her past.

Andy Samberg, 42, was recognized for his Hulu comedy Palm Springs while Riz Ahmed, 37, was selected for his performance as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing in the indie film Sound Of Metal.

Rounding out the eight was Winston Duke, 33, who stars in Nine Days as a mysterious man who interviews souls looking for the chance to be born.  

AFI Fest, based in Hollywood, runs until Thursday.
