Muriel’s Wedding star Gabby Millgate reveals which iconic line was almost cut from the Australian film

She’s best known for delivering the famous phrase ‘You’re terrible Muriel!’, in 90s hit film Muriel’s Wedding.

But Gabby Millgate, who played the character of Joanie Heslop, revealed the iconic line was almost cut from the movie.

In an interview with SBS’s Insight due to air on Tuesday night, the 50-year-old actress said the film’s director P.J. Hogan wanted to cut the phrase but film editor Jill Bilcock convinced him to keep it.

‘I was sure it was going to be cut from the movie,’ Gabby said.

‘It was Jill Bilcock who convinced [P.J. Hogan] that it was something he should keep, because when you see things over and over again they kind of lose their magic.’

The phrase went on to become the most recognisable part of the Australian film.

The 90s hit follows Muriel, played by Toni Collette, who spends her days dreaming of the perfect wedding day – despite never having been on a date.

In an interview with Stellar in May 2018, Toni said she was thankful for her hilarious lead role as the socially awkward singleton and what it continues to give her career.

‘Those doors would never be opening now were it not for Muriel’s Wedding,’ she told the magazine.

The Blacktown-born actress also revealed she still gets stopped in the street by fans of the film who say ‘you’re terrible Muriel’, more than two decades after it first hit the big screen.
