Reckless driver speeds along hard shoulder ‘at 80mph’ to undertake cars

Moment reckless Golf driver speeds along hard shoulder ‘at 80mph’ to undertake cars even though outside lane of the dual carriageway is EMPTY

  • Red Volkswagen Golf seen driving down hard shoulder for over quarter of a mile
  • Undertakes several cars before swerving straight over to the outside lane
  • Incident occurred on the A1 Northbound near Newry in Northern Ireland

Shocking footage has captured the moment a driver speeds down the hard shoulder of a motorway to undertake cars despite outside lane being completely empty.

Captured on dash cam, the incident happened on the A1 Northbound, near Sheepbridge Park in Newry, Northern Ireland on Friday afternoon.

The unidentified driver of a red Volkswagen Golf drives down the slip road at 80mph, however instead of joining dual carriageway he then proceeds at speed along the safety lane.

Once past a black Audi in front, he then swerves onto the carriageway without indication.

He and immediately moves into the outside lane putting his foot down – seconds later the vehicle disappears into the distance.

It is believed he sped down the hard shoulder for a quarter of a mile before changing lanes.

Irish actor and producer Tim Fergusson was the driver of the dash cam car.

He tweeted the clip to NI Road Policing and Safety, he wrote: ‘Recorded this on my dashcam today, a red VW Golf registration XFZ****, undertaking at approximately 80mph, using the hard shoulder, heading Northbound on the A1.

‘This is absolutely disgraceful driving and I hope you can do something about it.’

However in almost a week no one from the Police Service has responded to his tweet.

Edmund King, AA president, said: ‘The driver of the red car seems to been overcome with red mist as he makes dangerous undertaking moves on an almost deserted road.

‘Ironically the driver could have easily and legally pulled out and onto the outside lane without breaking any law or endangering any other drivers.

‘Shame the car he undertook wasn’t an undercover cop.’

Most recently Tim has starred in action movie ‘Grainne Uaile’, thriller ‘Tick’ and horror ‘6 Feet Below Hell’.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland have been contacted for comment.
