One of the rescuers, Jesse Hershkowitz, described how he and the others jumped into action to save the woman.

‘A large group of people [were] scrambling with jacks to try and lift the car and provide assistance,’ he said.

‘About six or seven of us just ran out into the middle of the street, and we actually physically lifted the car and moved it off of her, without moving her obviously.’

‘She was moving her feet and her ankles,’ he added.

The woman has not been identified and her condition is unclear.

She and another person were transported to a hospital, police said.

Investigators are questioning the livery driver of the SUV who hit the woman and remained on the scene after the accident.

It remains unclear whether the woman or the driver had the right of way.

So far no arrests have been made.
