Rihanna felt like ‘clown’ in yellow Guo Pei 2015 Met Gala dress

Rihanna made a shocking admission about her most iconic style moment ever at  2015 Met Gala during an interview with Access on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old living legend was etched into fashion history books when she stepped onto the red carpet five years ago at fashion’s biggest night in an ornate golden yellow ensemble by Guo Pei.

Fashionistas placed Rihanna at the top of nearly every best dressed list for the jaw-dropping number but she admits now that she was actually self-conscious and felt like a ‘clown’ before getting out of the car that day.

Shocker! Rihanna admitted that she was nervous to debut her now-iconic imperial yellow Guo Pei ensemble that she wore to the 2015 Met Gala and told Access that she felt like a ‘clown’ in an interview published Wednesday

‘I remember being so scared to get out of that car because I felt like, ‘I’m doing too much,” she recalled.

‘I was driving past the red carpet and I was just seeing gowns,’ Rihanna recollected. ‘I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m a clown, people are gonna laugh at me. This is too much.”

Getting herself in the car was an ordeal in the first place just trying to ‘choreograph’ how she would sit and fit in the back seat with the enormous coat, the Disturbia singer explained.

But when she got up Fifth Avenue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the usually calm and collected star was so nervous that she had her driver circle the block several times before she was brave enough to step out.

'I remember being so scared to get out of that car because I felt like, "I'm doing too much,"' she recalled. 'I was driving past the red carpet and I was just seeing gowns. I was like, "Oh my god, I'm a clown, people are gonna laugh at me. This is too much."'

Thankfully Rihanna mustered up the courage to get out and dazzle the waiting crowd with what became a legendary look.

‘I don’t regret it,’ she admitted in hindsight.

The theme for the Costume Institute Gala that year was China: Through the Looking Glass and Rihanna said at the time that she had found her ensemble online while researching Chinese Couture.

‘I’m so in love with this dress, but the train is insane!’ Rihanna told Vanity Fair on the red carpet at the event.

Adding: ‘I love this dress so much! It’s Chinese couture and it’s made by Guo Pei. It’s handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make. I found it online.’

The beauty went on to co-host the Met Gala in 2018 wearing another legendary look dressed like the world’s most glamorous pope.

The Margiela designed pieces were right in line for the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme.

Rihanna’s Met Gala reflection came during a string of interviews she did recently to promote her new Fenty Skin collection which drops on Friday.

Earlier this week, Rihanna uploaded a video to her YouTube channel explaining the ‘inspiration behind Fenty Skin’ and why it is a must have for all skin types.

She said that ‘making [Fenty Skin] was a challenge’ because she felt a responsibility to ‘cover all bases and thinking of the many skin types that are out there!’

As for the ‘the inspiration behind the brand,’ the Barbados native explained that it was all about ‘creating that foundation.’

‘Whether you want to wear makeup, light makeup, heavy makeup, whatever you prefer or are in the mood for, there is always a great foundation underneath that and THAT is the inspiration for Fenty Skin.’

Rihanna insisted that when it came down to creating the products for her line, she wanted to formulate products that ‘really work[ed].’

She also wanted the products to be packed with the ‘best ingredients,’ while still being cost efficient.

Over the last few years the mogul has solidified her space in the business industry with her coveted Fenty Beauty line, her Savage x Fenty lingerie brand and a high end clothing line with her partnership under the LVMH umbrella.

Her business ventures appeared to have pivoted the singer away from music but she told ET this week that she has actually been working on new tracks this whole time.

‘I am always working on music,’ Rihanna said during the interview. ‘I am always working on music and when I am ready to put it out in the way that I feel fit, it’s gonna come out.

Adding for good measure: ‘And you’re not going to be disappointed when it happens. It’s going to be worth it.’

Her last album, Anti, was released four years ago and since then RiRi’s fans have been clamoring for the icon to drop new music.

While she assures the public that she has a new album in the pipeline, when it will be released remains to be seen.

And, the Barbados born beauty isn’t about to buckle to the pressure of her fans to release it before she feels like it is perfect.

‘I’m not just gonna put it out just because people are waiting,’ Rihanna told ET. ‘It’s taken this long, I’m gonna make it worth it.’

'I am always working on music and when I am ready to put it out in the way that I feel fit, it's gonna come out,' Rihanna said during the interview of her anticpated follow up to Anti. 'And you're not going to be disappointed when it happens. It's going to be worth it.'
