‘I lose at least a thousand followers every time’: Ellie Goulding claims that her environmental activism posts on social media are harming her career
Ellie Goulding has revealed that she believes environmental activism is harming her career.
The Love Me Like You Do singer, 33, says that she loses vast swatches of social media followers whenever she talks passionately about climate change.
She said that she has felt she needs to hold back on discussing it in order to stay popular.

She told the So Hot Right Now podcast: ‘I was very protective over my job because I’ve created my job entirely by myself.
‘It’s my livelihood, it’s my everything, it’s how I make money. I employ a lot of people and what I do affects not just me but a lot of people.
‘I genuinely thought the activism would jeopardise my job, and I believe it has, actually.

‘I lose followers, every time I post anything about climate change, I lose at least a thousand followers.
‘Because people are following me for a very specific reason and it’s not the environment.’
In the past few months Ellie has shared posts about Earth Day and climate change in general.

‘This year the Earth has sustained nearly 8 billion of us while under incredible pressure.
‘Planet Earth’s ability to regenerate and provide healthy soils, breathable air and drinkable water is incredible but we abuse this. It’s time to step up.
‘As we emerge from this crisis, we must address the crisis in nature and climate. Who is up for a new way of living, being, dreaming, loving and thinking that puts the Earth first? I know I am. Every day needs to be Earth Day.’
Ellie, who currently has 14.5million followers on Instagram also reveals that she feels she has to stick to creating pop music and isn’t able to test out other genres.

She added: ‘I started making classical music, because all I really listen to is classical at the moment.
‘But it’s like being a pop artist, which is sort of the pigeonhole that I’ve ended up in because I have released a lot of pop songs.
‘That’s my fault, now I’m in that world and I can’t really go back’.
She went on to discuss the new album she is releasing with Swedish producer Max Martin, who is famed for producing songs for Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.

Ellie said that the album, Brightest Blue, is ‘a pop record, it’s still catchy’.
She added: ‘But it is interesting because there’s two sides. One is written entirely by me and then the other side is Big Max Martin, pop bangers.
‘He is sort of like a pop super god’.
The podcast will be released this week.
