‘I still cringe thinking about it’: Molly Meldrum says he had ‘lost the plot’ when he gatecrashed actor Samuel Johnson’s Gold Logie acceptance speech in 2017

Molly Meldrum upstaged actor Samuel Johnson’s Gold Logie acceptance speech in 2017.

But the Australian icon, 77, revealed to Stellar Magazine on Saturday he regrets the infamous gatecrashing incident.

‘I am still trying to forget my speech with Samuel Johnson. I wish I’d never done that,’ Molly said.

He added: ‘Talk about a classic example of me totally losing the plot on live TV. I still cringe thinking about it.’

At the time, an emotional Samuel attributed his Logie win to his family, after earlier dedicating his best actor Logie to his dying sister.

‘In all seriousness, you have given me such wonderful shelter, I feel indebted – I want to say thank you,’ Samuel tearfully spoke of his family.

But the Gold Logie winner had his moment upstaged by Molly, who contributed an address of his own after joining Samuel on stage mid-speech.

Swearing and at times difficult to understand, Molly appeared to be reflecting on his long time in the industry and how the mini-series had came to be made.

He launched into a long description of how Samuel had come to play him in the miniseries.

Molly explained that he had known Samuel’s dad and then came to learn he was an actor after he saw him on The Secret Life Of Us – remarking that he had a boyfriend at the time.

The Countdown host recounted how Samuel had phoned him after winning the role in the series Molly and wanted to meet up.

‘I said “you always know – Sam, what are you talking about? You want to study me, I’ll teach you how to be gay and be gay”. He said “f**k off”. He said “I can be a legend”,’ Molly said.

During the lengthy explanation it appeared as though polite attempts were being made by host Dave Hughes to escort Molly off stage, however, the host could have been prompting Molly to give Samuel the golden hat.

‘Now, Sam, come here. I know it’s very hard to play an old drama Queen like myself, and you did a great job, right,’ Molly continued.

‘So on behalf of the drama Queen of Australia, I would like to crown you also with my Gold hat, here it is, well done. Thank you everyone!’ he concluded.
