Man, 36, is shot dead and 21-year-old is in hospital with gunshot wounds after shooting at ‘lockdown street party’ in Manchester’s Moss Side

A 36-year-old man has died after being shot at a ‘lockdown street party’ in Manchester earlier today.

Another victim, aged 21, is in a life-threatening condition after the incident which is believed to have taken place in the Moss Side area of the city.  

Both victims were rushed to hospital with gunshots wounds shortly before 1am today but despite the efforts of medical workers, the 36-year old later died of his injuries, Greater Manchester Police said. 

The shooting, which has been likened to a ‘carnival’, is believed to have taken place at a lockdown street party that was being held at a car park, Manchester Evening News reports.

One resident told The Manchester Evening News: ‘I walked past at about 9pm and there must have been more than a thousand people there.

‘I thought it was carnival, it was so busy.’

Today images showed a police cordon placed around the scene of the shooting as a team of officers carried out investigations. 

The force also confirmed there was an ‘increased police presence in the Moss Side area where the incident is believed to have taken place.  

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Police are aware of an incident where shortly before 1am today two men self-presented at hospital with gunshot wounds.

‘Despite the best efforts of medical workers, a 36-year old man has sadly died from his injuries and a 21-year old man remains in a life threatening condition.

‘Police are currently responding to this incident and I would like to reassure the community that there is an increased police presence in the Moss Side area where this incident is believed to have taken place.

‘We will provide an update as soon as we have further information.’
