Old lady drives her Volvo into social distance queue at Morrisons

Elderly female driver injures eight pedestrians as she drives her Volvo estate car into socially-distanced queue outside Morrisons supermarket

A car driven by an elderly female has hit eight pedestrians who were in a socially-distanced queue at the entrance to a Morrisons supermarket this afternoon.

Eyewitnesses say the car hit a queue of people queuing to enter the store after the driver was believed to have suffered a medical episode.

She suffered a leg injury in the crash,  which saw her car drive into a barricade which then smashed into shoppers queuing to enter the store.

 Police were called to the scene of the accident at around 12.05pm in Paignton, Devon and they remain at the scene.

The road, which according to reports is Totnes Road, remains blocked – and traffic is being affected at the entrance to the supermarket.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to Totnes Road, Paignton, at around 12.05pm today with a report that a car collided with a barrier at the entrance to Morrisons supermarket which in turn hit several members of the public who were waiting in the queue.

‘The driver of the vehicle sustained an injury to her leg and up to eight pedestrians, have reportedly sustained injuries.

‘The extent of injuries are still being assessed but at this time it appears that none are serious or life-threatening.

‘The incident is ongoing.’

Eyewitnesses say the car hit a queue of people queuing to enter the store. A police cordon has been placed with barriers around the Volvo V70 involved in the crash.

None of the eight injureis were serious or life-threatening, police said. 

Four police units are still at the scene with three ambulances and a paramedic car.

Despite the accident earlier today, the supermarket is still open with officers working at the crash scene.
