Big Brother ratings: 930,000 metro viewers watch Laura Kaiviti’s eviction

Big Brother’s ratings are in: Season premiere doesn’t quite reach the ‘magic million’ – but still surpasses The Voice Australia and MasterChef

The season premiere of Big Brother aired on Monday night.

And while the rebooted reality series didn’t quite hit one million metro viewers, it still outperformed both The Voice Australia and MasterChef: Back to Win.

The eviction of Laura Kaiviti saw viewers swell to 930,000 viewers, and the episode overall had an average audience of 866,000.

Meanwhile, MasterChef attracted 854,000 viewers, about 12,000 less than Big Brother’s launch episode.

The Voice drew 849,000 viewers on Monday, again falling short of Big Brother’s average audience.

Laura Kaiviti was the first contestant to be eliminated from the competition.

Following her eviction, the 25-year-old dancer revealed to Daily Mail Australia what happened after the cameras stopped rolling.

She explained that several of the housemates who voted her out had attempted to get in touch after filming, but were all ignored.

‘Lots of them have tried to reach out but I’ve kept quite a distance. I don’t really mix business and personal,’ she said.

‘For me, once [the season] is officially over, I might reach out to some olive branches. For now, I just want to be able to peacefully watch and get through it.’

According to The Australian, Seven had predicted in May that Big Brother would fail to attract the ‘golden figure’ of a million metro viewers.

Presentations made by Seven’s advertising team estimated ratings below the 1,000,000 mark for the season – despite the huge buzz surrounding the reboot.

The newspaper also claimed that Seven’s advertising staff had predicted similar numbers for cooking show Plate of Origin and the return of Farmer Wants a Wife.

Several entertainment shows on rival networks, including Married At First Sight, The Voice and MasterChef, have reached the ‘magic million’ so far this year.
