‘I know what it takes to get on stage’: The Voice co-host Renee Bargh says her pop star past helps her relate to contestants on the singing show

Renee Bargh made a name for herself by interviewing some of Hollywood’s biggest stars on Extra.

But after her past as a teenage pop idol in the short-lived group Girlband was recently unearthed, The Voice co-host said it was a ‘stretch’ to call herself a real pop star.

Speaking to New Idea this week, the 33-year-old explained she uses her two-year experience as a singer to try and comfort the contestants before they hit the stage.

‘I do know how it feels and what it takes to get on stage and to give it your all and the nerves they must be feeling,’ she said.

‘I try and comfort them and their families too because it’s just as scary for them.’

Last week, it was revealed Renee once had aspirations to become a singer when her days in failed girl group Girlband, alongside Jessica Smith, Patrice Tipoki and Renee Armstrong, resurfaced in the media.

The group released two singles during their time in the spotlight – Electric and Party Girl.

Electric peaked at number 73 on the ARIA Singles chart in 2007.

Despite attracting international attention after appearing on a single to promote Sajid Nadiadwala’s Bollywood film, Heyy Babyy, the group disbanded in 2007.

Following her stint in the failed group, Renee was a backup singer for fellow coach and best pal Delta Goodrem before she landed a reporter role at Channel V.

The pair had formed a friendship after Renee was asked to perform for Delta at the ARIA Music Awards.

Speaking about their longtime friendship, Renee recently told Marie Claire:  ‘We have a pretty incredible story.’

‘The first time we ever met I was doing backing vocals. We didn’t connect properly until I moved to L.A. and we were both very new to the city.’

From the start, we were just kindred spirits and I felt like I had a sister for life. She’s been my rock and my number one supporter,’

In 2010, she relocated from Sydney to LA and became Extra’s weekend co-host.
