Black’s just got a lot hotter: Summer’s most stylish look has gone over to the dark side

Black is the coolest colour. So far, so typical fashion statement. But several style lovers I know insist it’s also scientific fact. After all, just look at the Bedouin, who wear it in some of the hottest places on Earth yet never overheat.

While we tend to think of it as a winter shade, stylists like to wear their beloved black all year round. Confronted with constant, catwalk-induced visual chaos, it acts as a mental palate cleanser. 

Perhaps for similar psychological reasons, it’s shaping up to be one of this summer’s biggest trends.

I confess: I’ve never had much desire to wear black every day. I live for bright colours, and on hot days I reach for one of my white ‘Timotei ad’ frocks. 

Until recently, the only black items I owned were leggings and a Self-Portrait number bought for an event with a ‘wear black’ dress code (I couldn’t resist adding red heels and a gold jacket).

However, now is the time to cross the mental Rubicon, and the High Street has a plethora of chic black outfits on offer. But remember, not all shades are created equal.

If, like me, you want to ease yourself in, an anthracite hue is easier to pull off. Pair this loose, tiered dress from Me+Em (above) with flat sandals for the perfect casual option. Or, for more coverage and a shape that will make the most of curves, try this belted, puff-sleeve H&M dress (centre).

Another trick is to break up the black with buttons, as seen on this Reiss sundress (far left), or a pattern.

If you’re on the lookout for something smart, however, nothing but the deepest jet black will do. 

This square-shoulder top and cigarette trousers combination (left) from Mango looks a treat with summery accessories, but will work with a blazer and ankle boots in autumn, too.

As for me, I’ve fallen in love with Mango’s polka dot ballerina skirt (far left), and the accompanying top promises full-blown Gothic glamour. I’m warming to the idea.
