Anyone who was planning to travel to China is being urged to check with their travel providers and insurers about possibly getting their money back.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised Britons against all but essential travel to mainland China.

Brian Brown, of analysts Defaqto, says that if the FCO has advised people not to travel to a country, they can claim a refund from their travel insurer or travel agent.

Insurance policies do vary, so travellers would be wise to check their policy.

For example, Aviva says customers who wish to cancel their trip will only be covered if they have paid for a ‘travel disruption’ option.

If you are already abroad, your tour company should make sure you are looked after and bring you home as soon as this is possible.

If you have made your own travel arrangements, check to see if you have ‘Catastrophe’ or ‘Enforced Stay Abroad’ cover.

Those who have not yet bought travel insurance policies will not be protected.

British Airways says customers due to travel to or from China before February 23 can rebook or claim a refund.

Virgin Holidays has said it is contacting passengers individually to discuss options.
