A look back at Chris Sebastian’s disastrous first stint on The Voice back in 2012

From trying to step out of brother Guy’s shadow to it being a ‘real slap in the face’: A look back at Chris Sebastian’s disastrous first stint on The Voice back in 2012

He might be back on The Voice Australia this year and ready to win.

But Guy Sebastian’s brother Chris certainly had a disastrous time on the hit show back in 2012, during the inaugural season.

The 31-year-old has previously described his first stint on the show as ‘c***py’ and said that despite his best efforts to step out of his brother’s shadow, producers simply didn’t care.

Chris had auditioned for season one of the show with a rendition of Beyoncé’s hit, Halo.

But after making team Seal, Chris was furious when Guy’s song Don’t Worry Be Happy came on in the background.

He told The Music in 2016 that he wasn’t impressed with the incident and said it was a ‘slap in the face.’

‘I really didn’t want to [do the show],’ Chris told the publication.

‘And the whole point was for me to have my own identity… So it was a bit of a c***py experience.’

He added: ‘It was a real slap in the face, and when I asked them about that they were just like, almost smug about it, like they kinda [knew] it all along, it was just really rude… real dishonest.’

Despite showcasing his remarkable singing talents on the show and even cracking the top 16, Chris failed to win.

Karise Eden, now 27, became the first winner of The Voice Australia.

Chris is now back as an All Star on the current season of The Voice, season nine, and ready to make a name for himself.

The father-of-one auditioned for the show during Monday night’s episode, to brother Guy’s apparent surprise.

Guy and Boy George were the first to turn their chairs as Chris sang Jealous by Labrinth. He eventually chose Kelly Rowland as his mentor afterwards.

However some fans weren’t impressed and said that he should not have been allowed to audition because his family link made it ‘unfair’ on the other contestants.

Chris had anticipated the backlash, however, and denied the competition was ‘rigged’ before his audition had even aired.

Speaking to Woman’s Day on Monday, Chris said he had already ‘ruled out’ choosing Guy as his mentor because he wanted to step out of his brother’s shadow.

He said: ‘I had him ruled out from the beginning. I’d hate people to think I wasn’t there for my own abilities or it was rigged.

He added: ‘I didn’t want anyone to think I was getting special treatment.’
