A motorist in Cambridgeshire has been filmed driving on the wrong side of the ‘road of death’ towards oncoming traffic.

Shocking dashcam footage shows a blue Nissan Note drift into the wrong lane on the A1307 as the road split.

Andy Ashton, 54, from Harlow captured the footage at 9.45am on May 1 while heading northbound at Haverhill Road, towards Linton in Cambridgeshire.

In the video the Nissan is seen moving over into the opposite carriageway as the A1307 divides.

Andy Ashton, 54, from Harlow followed the blue Nissan on the A1307 near Cambridge and initially thought it was going to turn off when it moved over to the right near a side road

Andy initially thought the driver was moving over to turn right off the A1307, which has been dubbed the ‘road of death’ due to the high number of serious and fatal accidents on the route.

But as the car continues along the wrong side of the road, Andy honks his horn to catch the female driver’s attention.

At the end of the footage the blue Nissan can be seen stopping before completing a three-point turn.

‘I had been following the blue Note for around a mile beforehand and noticed nothing out of the ordinary other than that it had tailgate damage,’ Andy said.

‘Approaching the dual carriageway I became aware that the car was not going to make the right turn as I thought the manoeuvre was to be – I beeped my horn and thankfully I was successful in getting her attention.

‘I noticed then it was a lady driving the car, she appeared to be a younger rather than an elderly driver.

However, the car continued down the A1307 towards oncoming traffic. Andy Ashton, who filmed the terrifying clip, is heard honking to warn the other driver

‘She then performed a three-point turn in a live lane. Oncoming traffic would be coming over a brow of a hill.’

Andy shared his dashcam footage on the Facebook group Bad Drivers Caught On Dash Cam with the caption ‘Just leaving Cambridge when this happened, what was she thinking?’

Some people blamed poor road markings or even a sat nav, but most suggested she should hand in her driving licence for missing the blue ‘keep left’ arrow sign.

Last year two people died after a three-car collision on the road.

Harold Stubbings, 80, and Margaret Wilson, 83, died following the crash on August 2, 2019.

Another fatality on the road was 25-year-old Mathew Smyth from Duxford, Cambridgeshire, who died on August 29, 2018.

In 2017 it was revealed there had been 52 serious or fatal accidents on the A1307.

In September 2019 a series of safety improvements began on the A1307 and in other areas as part of a £14m package for phase one of the Cambridge South East Transport Scheme.

This followed a petition that gained more than 1,000 signatures including that of Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock.

The blue Nissan’s near miss was not reported to Cambridgeshire Police.
