Contestant Charles Ingram, his wife Diana and university lecturer Tecwen Whittock were convicted in 2003 of deception for cheating on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

He used coughs from Whittock to guide himself to the correct answers. His wife was found guilty of helping to set up the scam. He was later kicked out of the Army, where he had served as major in the Royal Engineers

The couple went onto make several TV appearances on shows such as Wife Swap and The Weakest Link, but last year were declared bankrupt for the fourth time.

The third final episode of Quiz aired on Wednesday, and left viewers stunned with hints that ‘coughing Major’ Charles Ingram could be innocent.

The drama’s final scene sees them break the fourth wall with Chris Tarrant asking viewers to offer their own verdict.

The hints left many fans rushing to Twitter to praise the series with some also confessing they had begun to doubt whether the Ingrams did commit the crime.

In the series closing scenes, Charles and Diana have just learned that a documentary based on their crimes – which aired in 2003 two weeks after their trial – earned a record-breaking 17 million viewers.

As they prepare to go to bed, Charles switches on the television, leading host Chris Tarrant to address him directly.

He asks him: ‘What’s your answer? We’re all dying to know!’ and Charles then pensively turns towards the camera.

The scene is taken directly from the 2017 West End play Quiz on which the series is based, which asks its audiences to vote whether the Ingrams are guilty or not.

Regardless the ending still left many viewers stunned, as it left a question mark over the Ingrams had been wrongfully found guilty.
