Channel Ten’s MasterChef takes a tumble in the ratings and fails to crack more than one million viewers – as fans complain it has become ‘The Poh Show’

Channel Ten’s revamped MasterChef suffered a slight ratings tumble on Monday night, failing to gain more than one million viewers. 

The reality cooking show lost more than 100,000 viewers – pulling in a more modest 916,000 pairs of eyes. 

Across the five city metros, it performed best in Melbourne with 404,000 viewers, but lagged in Sydney and Brisbane with 230,000 and 129,000 viewers, respectively.

TV juggernaut LEGO MASTERS, hosted by Hamish Blake, is the new show to beat, pulling in 1,049,000 viewers on Monday night. 

MasterChef has been on somewhat of a winning streak, with the program attracting more than a million viewers nationwide four nights in a row last week.

The premiere episode was watched by 1.23 million viewers nationwide, making it the highest rating reality TV premiere for the year. 

The series was still pulling in an enormous 1.07 million viewers on Thursday last week.

This week, the new look series came under fire from viewers saying it is too skewed around contestant Poh Ling Yeow.

In the Facebook fan group Masterchef Australia 2020, many viewers branded this year’s series ‘The Poh Show’. 

‘Is this the Poh show?’ asked one fan. 

While another commented, ‘It always was the Poh show, even when she was with Julie [Goodwin] it was still the Poh show. Just over it.’

Poh, 47, first appeared on MasterChef back in 2009, and placed runner-up behind Julie Goodwin, before appearing as a mentor on last year’s season.  

The series looked to capitalise on its strong past seasons this year, by making somewhat of an all-stars cast after dumping its once popular judges. 

Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris have been replaced this year by Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo.
