My So Called Life cast reunite for ‘heartfelt and overdue reunion’

The cast of My So Called Life have reunited for a ‘heartfelt and overdue reunion’ via Zoom.

Wilson Cruz, who played Rickie Vasquez on the short-lived teen drama, shared a sweet screengrab of the nine-way video call on Wednesday night, as the former co-stars caught up during the coronavirus lockdown.

Present were the real Angela (Claire Danes), Patty, Sharon, Graham, Camille, Rayanne and Brian.

Wilson tweeted: ‘So…This happened the other night. Most of the #MySoCalledLife cast was available for what turned out to be a very comforting, sweet, heartfeltand overdue reunion.

‘We all have such love for each other, even 26 years later. It was overwhelming to see all of those faces together.’

Fans of the cult TV show were thrilled to see everyone together again, thanking them for creating a perfect show, gone too soon.

‘This just warmed my heart so much brought a tear to my eye Red heart do you all know the impact you’ve had? I hope you do – thank you for sharing’, one tweeted.

My So Called Life aired on ABC from August 1994 to January 1995 and followed the teenage trials and tribulations of Angela Chase and her peers. 

It was one of the first of its kind to weave serious issues including child abuse, homophobia, teenage alcoholism and adultery into the storyline.

The show concluded on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers devastated when it wasn’t picked up for a second season.

Claire was just 13 when she filmed the pilot episode of My So Called Life, while Wilson was 19.  

Last year, the pair shared their memories of the experience that launched both their careers in a piece for Variety to mark the show’s 25th anniversary. 

‘We were all kind of venturing forth into a big unknown,’ Claire said. 

‘I had just gone through junior high school. I felt bludgeoned, navigating my way through those social gymnastics. I was so bad at it’.

Wilson revealed he chose to come out when he landed the role of Ricky; his character was later revealed to be struggling with his own sexuality.

‘I wanted people to know that I, as a gay man — a gay boy at the time — really put my stamp of approval to what we were doing. So that’s when I told my parents, and that’s when I was kicked out’, he recalled.

‘Months later, I get this script where Rickie goes through a very similar thing. When I look back on that whole experience, I think of my fictional world and my reality converging. It was cathartic.’ 

Homeland star Danes has gone on to enjoy a high profile Hollywood career winning, along the way, three Emmys and four Golden Globes.

Cruz has continued to work steadily with starring roles in TV shows Noah’s Arc, Red Band Society, 13 reasons Why and Star Trek: Discovery.

Leto picked up an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.

He is known for films including Requiem For A Dream, as well as being the frontman of rock band 30 Seconds To Mars.
