Man, 43, is arrested after on-duty police officer ‘was stabbed’ in incident in Hampshire

  • A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder 
  • A police officer had to be taken to hospital after being attacked while on duty

  • Concern for a person’s welfare was raised at which point an officer was attacked 

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder as a police officer was left with serious injuries after being attacked while on duty.

Hampshire Police were called to an address in Basingstoke following concern for someone’s welfare on Easter Sunday at around 4.30pm.

Police attending the apartment block were then confronted by an individual which caused the incident – believed to be a stabbing – to occur. 

Police cars and an ambulance filled Churchill Way in Basingstoke, after an incident which has led to the arrest of a 43-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder

One of the officers was attacked by a man at the address in Churchill Way and was taken to North Hampshire Hospital after an ambulance was called to the scene, the force said.

A local resident told the Basingstoke Gazette that the man in question had stabbed the police officer as he approached. 

His injuries are not considered life-threatening and a 43-year-old has man been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The officer continues to be treated in hospital following the incident and though not life-threatening, the injuries have been deemed serious. 

Police said his next of kin have been informed and his family are receiving support through the ordeal.
