Starsky & Hutch’s David Soul reveals he wanted to swap roles with co-star Paul Michael Glaser as he found his character ‘pretty BORING’

He made a name for himself in the entertainment industry as one half of the classic crime fighting duo Starsky & Hutch in the 1970s.

And David Soul revealed that he found his character, Kenneth ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, ‘boring’ and wanted to swap roles with co-star Paul Michael Glaser instead.

Making an appearance on Tuesday’s edition of This Morning, the actor, 76, admitted: ‘When [Paul] walked into the audition of Starsky & Hutch, was I Hutch? I wanted the other part as I thought mine was pretty boring.

‘I told the producers, but they said no you’re the blonde and he’s the curly haired one so it needs to be this way.’

David and Paul have remained steadfast friends since first appearing in the show 41 years ago, and the pair had planned a special event to celebrate the milestone.

However, due to the coronavirus outbreak the event had to be cancelled, David said, as he explained: ‘Because of this virus we’ve had to cancel that, people are coming from all over the world.

‘It was a big deal, so we decided for their benefit, health wise and financially it wasn’t a great thing. [It’ll happen] next year, we’re just pushing it back.’

Despite the setbacks, David is currently working on a documentary called Cuban Soul which follows his journey to restore Ernest Hemingway’s 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe convertible.

The project has landed David in some trouble, though, as he attempted to avoid the embargo between the US and Cuba by transporting American car parts via the UK, which led authorities to threaten him with a prison sentence.

He explained: ‘I love Ernest Hemingway, when I was 15 I read Old Man And The Sea, I wanted to go to Cuba but of course I couldn’t. I worked for John F. Kennedy and then afterwards there was the embargo, and they’ve kept that stupid, stupid embargo.

‘So when I got my UK passport I was determined to go to Cuba, and I did, I’ve been to his house and got his car.

‘Of course I’ve been trying to get car parts, I couldn’t get American car parts from the us to Cuba so I went the other way. I went via the UK, and they found out. they threatened me with prison and a $2000 fine.’
