SAS Australia: Heath Shaw breaks down as he discusses diagnosis

AFL star Heath Shaw breaks down in tears during an interrogation on SAS Australia as he discusses his diagnosis with ADHD

Heath Shaw was overcome with emotion as he discussed his attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis on Wednesday’s SAS Australia.

The AFL star, 35, had been brought into an interrogation room by the directing staff (DS) after they said his performance on a rescue challenge earlier in the day was ‘the worst’ out of all the recruits.

When they asked about his life growing up, Heath emotionally discussed being diagnosed with the condition when he was around 12 or 13 years old.

‘I was average at school, and diagnosed with ADD in year eight,’ he said. ‘If I find something I like I’ll go a million miles an hour, if I don’t like it then…’

ADHD, formerly called ADD, is a condition with symptoms such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

Heath went on to say he believes his performance during the series has been ‘below mid-field’, becoming tearful as he added: ‘Every time I’ve done something, I’ve stuffed up a little bit. I don’t know.’

‘ADD leads me to getting frustrated, and leaves me open to criticism that can lead to emotion. At times I can punish myself,’ he went on to tell the camera.

Earlier in the episode, Heath failed at a task where he had to try and rescue a hostage while surprise shooters attempted to take aim at him.

He didn’t following the DS’s instructions, and was screamed at for being shot in two separate occasions.

‘That’s why I f**ed up majorly in the last one, because I tried to focus on the detail more than anything and I just f**ked it up even more,’ Heath added to the DS.

‘Even when I played with team mates around me – I’m a perfectionist, and I know you can’t achieve perfection but I aim for it, and I expect everyone around me to as well.’

DS Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham responded: ‘Dealing with failure is a big thing. If you fail with something, you just fall apart.

‘You’re taking it too deep. If you don’t take it in, take a breath. Pick yourself back up now, and smash forward again.’

SAS Australia continues Monday at 7:30pm on Channel Seven
