Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski receives an Emmy nomination for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale – as A-list Aussie stars Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton miss out


Yvonne Strahovski will be flying the flag for Australia at this year’s 73rd annual Emmy awards.

The 38-year-old actress received her second career Emmy nod in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Serena Joy on The Handmaid’s Tale.

She will be pitted against her co-stars Ann Dowd and Samara Wiley, as well as The Crown’s Helena Bonham Carter, Emerald Fennell and Gillian Anderson.

Fellow Aussie Joel Edgerton was overlooked for his part in the Amazon historical drama series The Underground Railroad.

While Nicole Kidman missed out on a for a Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nomination for HBO’s The Undoing.   

In her category instead is Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown), Elisabeth Olsen (WandaVision), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Cynthia Erivo (Genius:Aretha) and Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You).

However, Nicole’s co-star Hugh Grant did score a Lead Actor nod.

The Handmaid’s Tale received a total of 21 nominations this year.

Meanwhile, the Netflix British royal drama The Crown and Disney’s The Mandalorian both scored 24 Emmy nods.  

Another Disney show, WandaVision, picked up 23 nominations in the Limited Series category.

The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped it’s fourth season last month on Stan.

Yvonne’s nomination for the series is her second. She was previously nominated for the same role in 2018. 

The 73rd Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS in the US on September 19. It will be available to stream on Paramount+.
