‘Looked at like zoo animals’: New book claims Donald and Melania Trump ‘eat alone’ at Mar-a-Lago

‘Looked at like zoo animals’: New book claims Donald and Melania Trump ‘eat alone at roped off table’ in the center of a Mar-a-Lago restaurant and it is unclear how often she stays at resort

  • Donald and Melania Trump are ‘greeted by applauding guests’ when they dine
  • They live an ‘old-fashioned club life’ at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, new book claims
  • It is not clear how often Melania actually stays at the resort with her husband

Donald and Melania Trump ‘are treated like zoo animals’ at Mar-a-Lago and often eat alone at a roped off table, a new book claims.

Michael Wolff’s Landslide: The Final Days of the Trump Presidency, says the former first couple eat alone while 50 or 60 tables of diners gawp and stare at the patio restaurant.

Wolff also claims it is unclear how often Melania actually stays at the resort, or whether she is living with her husband.

‘Maybe Melania lives here’, he writes. ‘For four years in the White House, it was never quite clear how much time she was spending at the White House or in a house in Maryland where she had settled her parents.

‘Aides were careful not to closely inquire or openly wonder. Here too, in Mar-a-Lago, it was unclear.’

Melania famously did not move into the White House immediately in January 2017, choosing instead to stay with son Baron in New York until the end of his school year.

The former first couple might eat on a roped off table, but they also receive a round of applause when the arrive for dinner, according to Wolff’s book.

Fellow guests ‘rise from their seats to applaud the arrival of the former first couple to the dining area’ every evening.

Wolff adds the spectacle is a well practiced performance, with Trump appearing for applause ‘just as the patio has filled’.

And, when Melania is there, the couple sit alone at a roped off table in the center of the patio.

Writing in The Times, Wolff said the former first couple were living an ‘old-fashion club life’ at Mar-a-Lago, where wine tastings, Croquet Singles, and themed food nights dominate the schedule.

The couple have been living in the Florida country club since Trump left the White House in January.

As a result, Wolff jokes entry requirements at the famed club have shifted.

‘The only membership qualification now, beyond the actual cost ($250,000, up from $150,000 before the presidency, plus a hefty yearly fee), is to be an abject Trump admirer,’ Wolff writes.

Republicans reportedly fawn over the former president, hoping to win his favor, and an endorsement.

In one spring day, Wolff explains, Trump meets with Kansas senator Jerry Moran, Florida senator Rick Scott with actor Jon Voight.

Then former secretary of commerce Wilbur Ross followed by his former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

He also speaks to Fox News anchor Sean Hannity and his former golf course manager Dan Scavino. He speaks to ‘anyone who wants to listen’, Wolff claims.

Wolff’s book adds Trump fully believes the election was stolen from him in a brazen coup and that he sees himself as the ‘single most powerful political entity in the United States’.
