Jessica Mauboy reveals she feels ’empowered’ after leaving her record label and looks forward to releasing new music ahead of NAIDOC Week

Last year, Jessica Mauboy announced a shock split from her record label Sony Music after 16 years.

Now, the 31-year-old proud First Nations singer has revealed she feels liberated in the lead up to 2021 NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Jessica, who is now signed to Warner, said she has reached a stage in her life whereby she can finally merge her two worlds together – both her indigenous heritage and her pop artistry.

So empowered: After splitting from Sony Music, Jessica Mauboy revealed she’s more motivated to release new music. ‘I feel really empowered. For 15 years I’ve been working on being two people in the one place at the same time,’ she told The Daily Telegraph in an interview on Saturday

‘I feel really empowered. For 15 years I’ve been working on being two people in the one place at the same time,’ she told The Daily Telegraph in an interview on Saturday.

‘What I really needed to do was embrace that one self and bring those two (identities) together and feel comfortable and confident with that.’

The Australian Idol alum told the publication, her new environment has given her the motivation to release new music.

Confidence: 'What I really needed to do was embrace that one self and bring those two (identities) together and feel comfortable and confident with that,' she added

She also went on to admit that she’s willing to choose exactly who she will work with on the new record, which she hints will be ‘fun’ and experimental.

Jess broke away from her relationship with Sony, as well as her manager at the end of last year. The Young Divas star went on to sign with Warner.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph in December, she said: ‘I have had an incredible journey with Sony, for which I will forever be grateful.’

In February, she split from former manager David Champion, who signed her at 16. She said the pair now ‘see things differently’ when it comes to her career.

‘I found a new way to be the boss lady in the room. I started to put my foot down, and people listened,’ she previously told Private Sydney.

Jessica explained she and David separated because from a ‘business and musical perspective, we see things differently’ but said there were on ‘good terms’.
