Tens of millions of pints of beer are being delivered to pubs across England in time for the start of Alfresco April in eight days’ time.

With drinkers eagerly anticipating that long-awaited sip, breweries are working around the clock to keep up with the expected high demand for supplies from next week.

Figures compiled by hospitality industry website Caterer.com show that four million people have booked to visit venues across the country in the two weeks after April 12.

The reopening of the sector, including hotels and cinemas as well as pubs, is expected to deliver a £2.4 billion boost to the economy in the first month.

Customers are expected to spend an average of £167 each in pubs and restaurants alone.

Bosses at Molson Coors, the UK’s second-biggest brewery, said production had gone into overdrive at its headquarters in Staffordshire. 

A spokesman said: ‘At our Burton brewery alone, we now have 300,000 hectolitres of Carling in the tank ready to be delivered – that’s over 50 million pints.’

The equivalent of more than eight billion pints – both in pub and off-licence sales – were consumed in Britain in 2019.
