Not so fast! Burglar raids shop and flees on MOBILITY scooter… which has a top speed of just 8mph

  • The burglar, who is still at large, took vehicle from Modern Mobility in Leicester
  • CCTV shows him breaking in before getting into the £10,000 Cabin Car scooter
  • Manager Nick Partridge said scooter was ‘the most expensive item in the shop’

He may well have broken the law, but he certainly didn’t break the speed limit.

This thief was spotted kicking down the doors to a shop and then making off in a mobility scooter with a top speed of 8mph.

The burglar, who is still at large, took the vehicle from Modern Mobility in Leicester, on Saturday evening.

CCTV footage shows him breaking into the disability shop showroom before getting into the £10,000 Cabin Car scooter.

Manager Nick Partridge said it was ‘the most expensive item in the shop’.

Police have now launched an investigation in a bid to track down the thief, who was spotted by a member of the public making a slow getaway at around 8.45pm.

The suspect, who was wearing a face mask and glasses, first tried to pick the lock of the disability aids store inside the shopping centre but to no avail.

He then began kicking down the front door, which eventually gave way, before he jumped in the Cabin Car scooter – which can reach a speed of up to 8mph.

Within 20 seconds of entering the store, the man drives out of the building in the top-of-the-range mobility scooter and has not yet been traced.

Store owners believe the man had ‘cased the joint’ before the raid as he appeared to know exactly what he was looking for.

They have now offered a reward for information which leads to his capture and the safe return of the ‘most luxurious mobility scooter on the market in the UK’.

Manager Mr Partridge said: ‘Somebody has now been left without a mobility vehicle because of this cowardly act.

‘The Cabin Car is the most expensive item in the shop, somebody clearly knew what they were looking for.’

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: ‘At around 8.45pm on Saturday, March 13, officers received a report from a member of the public of a burglary at a commercial premises on Fosse Park Avenue.

‘Officers attended and found the front door of the premises had been forced open. A mobility scooter was stolen.

‘No injuries were reported and inquiries are ongoing.’

Tom Bousefield, marketing manager at Modern Mobility, said the crook had caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and forced the store to temporarily close.

The Cabin Car scooter which was stolen was a one-off custom-made 158cm long model, weighing 178kg, with a maximum range distance of over 20 miles.

‘We couldn’t believe it when we saw the footage back and how somebody could stoop so low to steal a mobility scooter.’
